RECOMMENDED FABRIC

Light- to mid-weight knit fabrics such as jersey, ITY, Liverpool knit, double knit, or ponte with at least 25% stretch both horizontally and vertically. There are two exceptions:

  • Relaxed bodice: at least 25% stretch horizontally, and at least 10% vertically.
  • A-line maxi skirt: due to the weight of the piece, 0-10% lengthwise stretch is ideal. You can use 25%+, but may need to adjust the length to account for the skirt stretching vertically.

If you are lining your bodice (for the square neckline, optional for all others), you can use the same fabric for the lining, or a lighter weight knit with the same amount of stretch.

Interfacing (turtle neckband only): lightweight stretch interfacing (optional)

NOTIONS

Ballpoint or stretch needle, thread, twin needle (optional for hem).

For elasticated waistband: 1.5 yd (1.4 m) of 1” (2.5 cm) wide elastic.

Optional: Clear elastic for shoulder seams (¾ yds/0.7 m), slash pocket openings (3/8 yd/0.3 m), and/or waist seam (1.5 yd/1.4 m).

Optional: Fusible hem tape (maximum of 6 yds /5.5 m).

good

made a dress with fitted top, turtle neck and a-line skirt and am quite pleased with the outcome. Its a bit more relaxed than my beloved Rivermont dress (made at least 7 of this pattern), but much faster to sew. Will try other variations soon

Such an adaptable and flexible pattern. I love it!

I haven’t yet made a full Grafton dress, but I’ve used the skirt and sleeves with the Dewey dress.
I had made the Dewey with the faux wrap skirt in a sequinned jersey, then wanted to wear the dress for a social ballroom and Latin dance. The original skirt was too narrow for ballroom dancing, so I took it off and managed to find enough of the remaining fabric to do the Grafton full circle skirt.
I received so many compliments on both versions of the dress. Looking forward to making a full Grafton soon.

Fantastic

I have been looking for a pattern like this for a long time. Fits fabulously, already made three garments.

Awesome pattern

I love this pattern so much! I have made a dress and a top. I love the square neckband and bishop sleeves but I also love how many mix and match variations there are. It's not a cheap pattern but totally worth it and great value. It's helped me fall in love with stretch sewing again. Oh and it's really quite an easy quick sew. Best pattern I've ever bought.

Serious knit options

It's an easy to follow pattern, I had zero difficulties with it and there are so many options! Fitted sleeveless clean finish square necked bodice with asymmetrical skirt. The burrito method for the lined bodice is great and I hope to use it elsewhere. I was unsure re bodice front length as I usually add some as part of an FBA but I didn't need to at all this time! I didn't need to worry about the bust apex height either which I usually adjust, though if doing an FBA you might do better to use the darts for the high bust size rather than the bust as I did - fortunately the fabric pattern looked better this way but in future I'll position the darts further in. Check and see how it works w your undergarments of preference. Don't worry if the asymmetrical skirt looks odd to you when tried on unattached to bodice or waistband - it will drape just fine assembled. Some minor adjustments to the side seam as I overestimated my waist measurement (measure it where the waist seam will hit on the bodice, or about there) but out of the packet and for a first try on the pattern it went great! Other than the FBA (I just bumped out the side seam on the front bodice only) I changed nothing. It didn't take very long either, a quick sew. I'm excited to make more soon!
