SIZING

Band sizes 28 to 54 and cup sizes C, D, DD, E, F, G, H, I, and J; includes full bust 31"-65" (79-165 cm) and underbust 28"-55" (72-142 cm).

Note: Cashmerette bra sizing is calculated in a different way to standard Cashmerette garment sizing. Your Cashmerette bra size may also be different from your ready-to-wear bra size. Use the bra size guide (also included in the Loftus pattern instructions) to determine your ideal starting size.

RECOMMENDED FABRIC

The Loftus Bralette is designed to be made from non-stretch fabrics for the main fabric and sheer bra cup lining, although a slight amount of stretch for the main fabric will also work. The lining fabric is visible at the center front insert.

  • Main fabric for cups: non-stretch lace or non-stretch to low-stretch fabrics such as duoplex or lingerie satin. NOTE: If making with lace, 45" (115 cm) wide lace fabric is required for the this pattern due to the width of the pattern pieces. Narrower strips of lace are not suitable.
  • Lining fabric for cups & center insert: non-stretch bra cup lining.
  • Back band & powerbar: mid-weight stretch fabric such as nylon/spandex power mesh with 25–50% stretch in one direction and at least 10% in the opposite direction. For a more supportive bra, use a heavy-weight power mesh.

ELASTICS

  • Band elastic: 2” (5 cm) wide plush elastic (sometimes called waistband elastic).
  • Underarm and neckline elastic: 3⁄8” – ½” (1 – 1.2 cm) wide plush-back elastic (generally comes with a picot/decorative edge).
  • Strap elastic: ¾” (19 mm) wide plush-back strap elastic.

NOTIONS

  • Hook and eye closure: 4 rows x 3 columns (3”/7.6 cm wide)
  • Rings and sliders: two ¾” (19 mm) wide sliders and two ¾” (19 mm) wide rings.
  • Universal or microtex needle, thread.

TOOLS

Tailor’s ham or rolled up towel, standard presser foot, zipper foot, walking foot for sewing machine (optional), press cloth.

very comfortable bra - best for large bust

First - I find the loftus bra extremely comfortable although mine needed lots of adjustments. It gives lots of support without wires. I also made one for a friend who has very large soft breasts and can not find a good commercial bra. For her this pattern was perfect, no changes needed - she mentioned it is the most comfortable bra she ever had. So I would definitely recommend this for somebody who is very large busted.

For myself though, I had to do lots of adjustments as my bust is medium sized, with wider root and round overall with dense tissue. I feel it pushes my breasts down (makes them look droopy) because it has lots of /too much room under the bust point and it is pretty tight/comfortable above the bust point. Horizontally it fits nicely. I had to remove almost an 1" on the vertical at bust level, and change the angle of the straps. I tried a smaller size and that also needed vertical changes. Quite a few people in the (Beginner International Bra Bee) class I took changed the angle of the elastic from 90 to 120 degrees and sew it around so it does not roll up. The angle of the center cup section is not continuing the center section angle, so I shaved some of the pattern to make it continuous. With these changes, my #4 bra is finally comfortable. I can probably tweak it a bit more but it works :)

The wonderful Loftus Bralette

I purchased a kit from your recommended supplier in NZ and used the video as I haven’t made a bra before. That all made it so straight forward. The bra fitted perfectly and is very comfortable. I am definitely going to use the pattern again

Brilliant bra!

I've longed for a no-wire bra that also is comfortable and gives plenty of support. This is it! I was a bit hesitant to tackle making a bra, but the instructions were really clear. Thanks a million for having devised the pattern, Jenny.

Love this bra!

I have tried other bra patterns with limited to no success. I decided to give this one a try - I love it! I was able to find my size on the second make. I used some leftover quilting cotton to try it out and actually really like it so am in the process of making several more with leftover fabric. Also different with this pattern - I’m actually enjoying the make! That is very different from other patterns where I felt I was slogging through.

Loftus, slightly hacked

I had made the Willowdale Bra, so I had plenty of bra-making supplies on hand with which to make my first Loftus Bralette. Being short (barely 5 feet), a 2-inch bra band was not going to work for me (and in 30D I don't need so much support), so I used a 1-inch band, which also allowed me to use the same hook and eye closures as I had for the Willowdale. I loved the fit of my Loftus! Because of the way the front straps are formed, this was the first bra in many years whose straps did NOT fall off my very sloped shoulders! The one complaint I had was with the way the elastic back straps are attached to the front strap - the folded under end of the front strap dug into my shoulders. My solution was to attach the elastic strap the same way as on the Willowdale. Now my Loftus is great!

Just a suggestion

The option to have patterns in graded sizes is essential especially for plus size women. I could have easily printed one letter size with the grades if it was available as opposed to having to print my size 4x to piece together one that fits. It was so frustrating. Not everyone needs that perhaps. But I did. Other pattern companies offer that option why not yours. I wouldn’t buy again but I have suggested to other plus sized pattern seekers on facebook to give it a go.

Hi! We do have graded sizes on the Loftus - if you need more help finding your sizes, just send us an email at hello@cashmerette.com and we'll be happy to help
